melancholia.

Trier (French: Trèves, Luxembourgish: Tréier; Latin: Augusta Treverorum; the Latin adjective associated with Trier is Treverensis) is a city in Germany on the banks of the Moselle River. It is the oldest city in Germany, founded in or before 16 BCE.

Colmar, France. 20-22.06.11

Our hotel was a complete shit box and our room shook every time a train went past but for some reason, we saw the funny side of everything bad about it. On Tuesday, we drove up to Hartmannswillerkopf/the Vieil Armand in the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park. At a height of 956m above sea level, you could see the Alsatian plain, the Black Forest, the Jura range, the Swiss Alps and part of the Vosges mountains.
During the WW1, the site was the scene of many bloody battles which killed tens of thousands of men. In addition to the national cemetery, a tomb which includes the remains of 12,000 unknown soldiers has been built on the site, in order to commemorate the events that occurred in the area.
It was so silent and peaceful up there, making it difficult to imagine the horrifying scenes that had occurred there almost 100 years ago. At the same time, it was amazing to visit a place which coincided with my Year 12 Modern History studies of WW1 - there’s a huge difference between reading about something and actually being in an area where those things occurred and being faced with the facts rather than just seeing words and numbers on paper.

Driving to the Vieil Armand, just before my camera battery died :(

Luckily, our two days coincided with Fךte de la Musique - World Music Day which began in France, where musicians, both amateur and professional, take to the streets and perform in celebration of music. It was so amazing to see such a variety of music in a completely different culture, but I think the overall vibe was universal. Unfortunately, a bunch of skinheads started a brawl which seemed to kill the mood so we went back to our hotel relatively early.

melancholia.

I just saw it and it’s absolutely amazing, but like I said, very peculiar.

It’s almost indescribable. I love it though.

I can’t wait to see Melancholia by Lars von Trier tomorrow. I wonder if it’ll touch me the way Antichrist did. I wonder if bright-eyed Kirsten Dunst will be able to play such a role in such a movie. I wonder if it’ll be as good as it looks, or if it’ll be as boring, as some people say it is. But no matter what, you never watch a film of his without being touched in some way. And if you don’t - you haven’t really watched it. You don’t just sit down and watch a Trier-movie. It’s not your typical Jeniffer Aniston and Adam Sandler comedy. I know it sounds so free-spirited and pretentious, but you have to open yourself up to a new and greater experience to really enjoy his work.

For those of you who don’t know I’m currently in Germany for the next couple weeks visiting the fam and celebrating my brother’s graduation from HS - which, btw, I can’t believe is happening, it makes me feel so old!

While I was a little reluctant to come here for two weeks (I know, I know, champagne problems), just because I felt there were several things I needed to stay in Chicago and focus on, which was mainly finding a job, but now I’m thinking it’ll be good for me to get away from the rush of the city, recharge, regroup, and come back guns blazin’!

I wanted to keep a mini-photo diary of my time spent here just to have something to fill my time and my dad has a sweet camera that I want to play around with and possibly steal back to Chicago with me ;)

So Day 1 of my German Adventure was spent shopping around Trier. I love Trier, it is quite possibly my favorite city in Germany so I was super excited to visit again. All the little cafes, boutiques, and brick-covered streets - such a beautiful city…

One of my most favorite cathedrals in all of France.

One of my most favorite cathedrals in all of France.

Strasbourg Cathedral. Strasbourg, France. Construction started in the year 1015!

It was absolutely beautiful. Great architecture and a great little town.

I’m so happy! I’ve been listening to her since I was 12. Couple of days ago I went through all her DVD’s and CD’s I bought when I was younger. I’m so glad she recovered from everything that’s happened to her and I’m gonna see her finally. She was such a sweetheart always. :)

tomorrow i will see them live (:
